Iron Worker Apprentice

Iron Workers erect the steel framework of large buildings, towers, bridge, stadiums, prefabricated metal buildings and other structures.  Iron Work falls into a number of related segments of the trade and most Iron Workers do more than one type of iron work.  Structural Iron Workers unload, erect and connect fabricated iron members and pre-cast panels to form the skeleton of the structure.  They also perform metal decking and

sheeting on structures.  Ornamental Iron Workers install and erect curtain wall and window systems, stairways, cat walks, gratings, ladders, doors, railings, fencing, gates, screens, platforms and entranceways.  Reinforcing Iron Workers fabricate and place steel, wire mesh, composite bars and post tensioning cables in structures wherever reinforced concrete is used. Rigging Iron Workers unload, move and set machinery and other materials or work falling under the jurisdiction of the Iron Worker. Iron Workers perform welding and burning when required to secure their work to the structures. Most iron work is done outdoors and involves walking, lifting, climbing, balancing and reaching. The work is frequently done in high places.  Safety devices such as nets, safety belts or harnesses and scaffolding are used.
