AGC's LEAN Units 1 and 2

Lean Construction challenges all project stakeholders to develop and apply better ways to manage the overall construction process.

Unit 1: Variation in Production Systems
is a half-day course that introduces one of the foundational concepts of Lean Construction, variation. Following completion of this course, participants will have the ability to:

  • Define the different types of variation
  • Explain the concept of throughput and distinguish it from productivity
  • Discuss the role of variation in production operations
  • List sources of variation in construction settings
  • Explain and contrast variation mitigation techniques

Unit 2: Pull in Production is a half-day course that introduces concept of pull as a means to reliable workflow. Following completion of this course, participants will have the ability to:

  • Compare batch-and-queue and continuous-flow production systems
  • Distinguish push systems from pull systems
  • Describe the impact of pull on production systems
  • Explain pull strategies in construction operations

Cost: Unit 1 $150 for members and $250 for non-members. Unit 2 $150 for members and $250 for non-members 

Registration fee includes lunch and the Participant’s Manual for the course. Cancellation policy: Full refunds will be made for cancellations received before March 17th. After that date, no refunds will be granted. Replacements accepted.

About the instructor:

Units 1 and 2 will be taught by Joe Levens, Assistant Professor at Pittsburg State University. Joe began his construction career with Martin K. Eby Construction Co., Inc. in 1978 holding key leadership positions in engineering, field management, project management, estimating, division management and vice president of construction operations. Joe’s project assignments have provided him a broad background of experience to draw from in his current position. His projects have included health care and office buildings, educational facilities, water/wastewater treatment plants, raw water supply piping, industrial and manufacturing facilities, major highway bridges and heavy/civil projects. In 2010, he completed his 32 year career with Eby as the Senior Vice President of Corporate Development. His primary areas of responsibility included human resources (safety and training), business/industry relations, governmental affairs and procurement.
